Elder Activists for Social Justice

Objective 1. EASJ/EAN members identify themselves as Elders, reclaiming our moral voice and speaking for the welfare of all, most especially for the grandchildren and future generations. 

They will become role models, restored to positions of leadership, and will “feed wisdom back into society and will actively guide the long term reclamation project of healing our beleaguered planet; and will function as “wisdomkeepers” inspiring us to live by higher values that will help convert our throwaway lifestyle into a more sustainable, Earth-cherishing one.”Rabbi Zalman Schachter Shalomi"

Objective 2:   Educate ourselves regarding the important social justice issues of our time in order to transform ourselves and the world and offer support to members in this work.

Objective 3: Outreach and engage in social justice issues in local and regional communities as well as nationwide.

Objective 4:  Develop EASJ as a well functioning team, soliciting new members and determining the appropriate website presence to support EASJ.

Task 1: Update Leadership/Board as to the importance of this objective and discuss how to make actionable within EAN so that this becomes an EAN objective; perhaps working with EDU team and other EAN teams.

Key Result:  EAN adopts this as an objective for the whole of the organization

Target completion date: ongoing

Responsible: EASJ Team

Resource requirements: none

Task 2: Encourage EAN members to identify as Elders when writing blogs, speaking in public, attending demonstrations,  etc  so that the voice of the elder will be understood in public as a legitimate and valuable voice to speak for future generations, and for the welfare of all and of our planet.

  • Members will be encouraged to write Letters to the Editor
  • Members attend public demonstrations and meetings with a standard EAN banner/poster posted in EAN toolkit offered on website
  • Members hand out EAN brochures at public venues, posted in EAN toolkit offered on website
  • Members add “Member – Elders Action Network” to their email signatures with the EAN URL- sample available in EAN toolkit online

Key Result:  25 Letters written to local news editors, 50 members report using EAN banners publicly and handing out EAN brochures, all EAN Leaders add  EAN to their e/signature, 100 members add  EAN to their e/signature

Target completion date:  Beginning January 2019 and ongoing

Responsible:  EAN will promote to members

Task 3:  Offer Workshop “the Moral Voice of An Elder”

Key Result:  20 people attend this in person workshop

Target completion date: June 2019

Resource requirements: Admin Support and rental fees $500

Task 4: EAN promoting Elders public voice

  • Write short blog for EAN e-newsletter about Elders Moral Voice
  • EAN Toolkit developed and posted on website for members use

Key Result:  blog for EAN enews, EAN toolkit be developed and posted on website

  • Molly Brown will offer a template for Letter to the Editor
  • Lynne Iser will write Blog- “Why Identify As An Elder?”
  • EAN will create EAN toolkit

Target completion date: blog-June 2019, EAN toolkit by January 2019

Responsible:  EAN website team and Lynne Iser and Molly Brown

Resource requirements: $500 admin time to develop and maintain the toolkit,

$500 for banners and brochures printing and postage.

Objective 2:   Educate ourselves regarding the important social justice issues of our time in order to transform ourselves and the world and offer support to members in this work.

Task 1:Continue our monthly, facilitated EASJ Community conversations, on-line and in person, on emerging and ongoing social justice issues, using a variety of resources. Continue to create community and support for EASJ members.

Key Result:  6 to 20 elders participate monthly

Target completion date: ongoing monthly

Resource requirements: Admin Support $50 per conversation? $600 total per year?

Task 2:  Offer occasional Open Forums on emerging social justice topics

Facilitators Molly Arthur and Molly Brown. Learn more HERE. Dates in 2019: March 20, April 3 and 17, May 1, 9-11 am PST

  • Identify current “hot topics” at EASJ Conversations and determine "ad hoc" Open Forums to hold

Key Result: 3 Open Forums a year

Target completion date: quarterly

Responsible: EASJ team

Resource requirements: $500 per Forum, for guest speakers, $1500 total

Task 3:  Partner with EAN committees: ECA and EDU and with other social justice organizations to offer activist/transformative education programs that are aligned with EASJ values and work. Offer reciprocal exchange of courses to outside orgs/websites.

Key Resuls: Determine 3 outside courses to be offered on our website. Get 3 of our courses to be offered on other orgs sites. 

Target completion date: April 2019 to determine other orgs courses  to run on our website - one per quarter  June, Aug, Oct 2019. Get three of our courses offered on other orgs sites -spring, summer, fall.

Resource requirements: $500 for course fees

 

Objective 3: Outreach and engage in Social Justice issues in local and regional communities as well as nationwide.

Task 1:  Offer information and opportunities for engagement with a variety of social justice issues stemming from our partnerships with other organizations and groups

 

Key Result:  Vet and list in EASJ webpages, organizations that are aligned with our EASJ values and efforts. Write resolutions of support for campaigns/organizations with each partnership being championed by an EASJ Team member.

Target completion date: List-on-going, Resolutions-on-going

Responsible:  EASJ team and EAN promote

Resource requirements: None

Task 2: Start a Speakers Bureau of EASJ members- EASJ members will be invited to be in an Elders Speakers Bureau- offering topics in their expertise thru an Elders lens. EASJ determines list of speakers and vets content and outreach and coordinates outreach to media- radio, TV and videos and for in person appearances and at conferences.

  • Key Result: EASJ Speakers Bureau developed and promoted. EASJ will solicit speakers for Elders Speakers Bureau and work with them on topics and content, 8 members offer to be on the Elders Speakers Bureau
  • Target completion date: Speakers Bureau launched by March, 2019.
  • Responsible: EASJ will solicit speakers for Elders Speakers Bureau and work with them on topics and content, EAN will promote to members and partner orgs
  • Resource requirements: $500 for travel expenses for Speakers (mostly local)

Task 3: Design and develop a format for EASJ study-action groups that can be organized in local communities, by offering a template with topical resources, study questions and opportunities for engagement. 

  • Work in conjunction with ECA.

Key Result:  support the beginning of 3 Study Action Groups

Target completion date: December 2019

Resource requirements: Admin Support

Objective 4:  Develop EASJ as a well functioning team, soliciting new members and determining the appropriate website presence to support EASJ.

Task 1: Develop a team structure to identify key roles, provide organizational education and support for team members to serve and be effective. Hold regular planning meetings for team leaders.

Key Result:  team members will share responsibilities

Target completion date: December 2019

Responsible: EASJ team

Resource requirements: None.

Task 2: Expand our audience by enrolling new members to the EASJ Team, sending welcome letters and invitations to all who indicate an interest in social justice issues.

Key Result:  new members on EASJ team and more participants in conversations, courses and outreach

Resource requirements: None.

Task 3:  Update our presence on the EAN website so that folks can easily become involved in social justice issues through education, witness, service and action; with educational resources, links to excellent resources, monthly blogs and stories of moral witness/service/action by EASJ Team members.

Key Result:  EASJ webpages will be edited and updated
