Elder Activists for Social Justice
Community Conversation and Team Meeting
Thursday, June 15th at 9:30 to 11:00 am Pacific time, 12:30 to 2:00 pm Eastern time via Zoom conferencing
The first hour of our meeting will be a time to explore how our cultural, family, and personal identifications shape and limit our worldviews. We welcome newcomers to CEN as well as seasoned EASJ friends to engage in meaningful conversation.
The following questions may help you explore your own story prior to the meeting. During our meeting, we will explore this theme as individuals and as a group.
As I think about my ancestry and unique experience of my own life, how does it affect my identity, my sense of who I am?
How does it affect my life's purpose, mission or work, the way I want to serve? How does this fit into creating a loving and just world?
Other preparation suggested:
Speech by the Mayor of New Orleans, Mitch Landrieu, on the removal of four Confederacy statues from city property. A very inspiring and moving model for facing and accepting our history, both what we can be proud of, and what we now see as wrong and harmful.
If you missed watching Molly Arthur's three-minute video on her ancestry story, check it out here.
The last half hour of the call will be our monthly “business meeting.” We will review the CEN Declaration on Doctrine of Discovery and consider how to bring this Declaration to our CEN community and share the resources to support further understanding. ALL are invited into this exciting discussion where we work together to get into action, as individuals and as an organization.
We will also talk about our EASJ proposal to hold a public Webinar and in-person workshops on the West and East Coasts in the Fall. Our next three meetings in July, Aug and Sept will be for the EASJ committee only, in order to plan the public webinar and workshop to be offered in the Fall, 2017.
