CEN Foundation Workshop

To foster a movement of vital elders, dedicated to growing in consciousness and awareness while actively addressing the demanding challenges facing our country, our society, and Earth.

The Course will create an environment in which elders engage in personal change in service to the transformation of our humanity, our earth, and our future. Our course invites a shift in participants from individual self to global self, ego-system thinking to eco-system thinking, from inaction to action, from disempowered older to empowered elder.

This foundational workshop will provide resources, connections, and ideas for local social, economic, political, and environmental actions. Elders will also learn a variety of communication skills, group facilitation techniques, mindfulness and deep listening practices that will be helpful as they engage more actively in the world.

Understand the Mission and Vision of the Conscious Elders Network

● Know how to live more simply in the food, energy, and products we consume

● Become engaged in personal and global healing

● Become inspired to new paths of lifelong and regenerative learning

● Take away increased skills in mindfulness, deep listening, and dialogue

● Choose new enlivening ways to engage…and give back!

After each session participants will have access to a homework and resources web page with daily practices and journal questions as well as extended readings, videos, and websites relating to the topics of each session.

The following four books have provided key source material for our workshop. They are not required reading, however we highly recommend them for your reading list now or in the future.

From Age-ing to Sage-ing (2nd ed.)   Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi

The Great Work   Thomas Berry

Active Hope   Joanna Macy and Chris Johnstone

Sacred Activism   Andrew Harvey

Session One – Being an Elder

We will review literature from Rabbi Zalman and others on the valuable and needed roles of Elders in today’s world crises. And explore what it means for us to step into the role of an Elder.

Sessions Two – Growing in Consciousness

We will discuss what it means to be conscious and look at this question from both a scientific as well as spiritual point of view. We will practice various techniques that build awareness of our interconnection to all life.

We will look at the many crises facing our world and come to understand some of the root ecological, social, spiritual and cultural divides causing the problems. We will practice keeping our hearts and minds open as we discover what it is that most concerns us.

Session Four – The Great Turning: The Sustainability Revolution

We will learn about the Great Turning, the revolution of our time, and learn about the many positive actions being taken to create a sustainable future for our grandchildren. And learn how we can participate.

Session Five – Sacred Activism

We will explore how our activism can come from the sacred place of knowing that we are one humanity, one earth, one future. Because as Einstein said “The problems we have cannot be solved at the same level of thinking with which we created them.”

Session Six - Taking Action Together for the Earth

This is the opportunity to discover how, when and with whom you are going to take action on behalf of life. We will be forming CEN groups and connecting participants to local organizations. Groups will meet together on line or in person to plan their next steps and report out at the final meeting

Session Seven - Elder Circles • Projects Creation • Celebration -

We will hear from the Elder Circlers, Actions Groups, and Individual projects that have formed about their plans and next steps. We will celebrate our time together and reflect on what we have learned.

What participants have said about the workshop...

“The CEN Foundations course gives a superb overview of what CEN is about as well as going into depth, especially through the varied, imaginative, and potentially transformative experiential exercises, as well as the rich resources. You will emerge more knowledgeable and wiser -- not only about what Conscious Elders Network really means but also about how you want to embrace your elderhood and contribute to making our world and earth a better home for our great, great grandchildren. This workshop will be valuable for CEN "old-timers" as well as new members.“

-- Meg Newhouse, Passion & Purpose LifeCrafting,

Founder of the Life Planning Network, CEN "old-timer"

"This course lays the foundation for our thinking, acting and being needed to preserve all life for all future time. If there is one course that says everything about everything, this is it. In a world exploding with information, how do we decide what to let in…This gives participants the keys to what's important and a method by which to choose."

-- Geoff Ainscow, producer of The Deep Time Walk, CEN “old-timer”
