Elder Activists Under Arrest at Rally, Group Protesting Treatment of Immigrants - June,29, 2018
The leader of our Elder Activists for Social Justice Team Lynne Iser and fellow Philadelphia Elders stood today demanding that children be reunited with their parents and to stop Family Detention. Innocent children do not belong in jail!
As Elders and Grandparents we condemn with horror the inhumane, uncaring and unethical immigration system being propagated by the policies of the administration of U.S. President Donald J. Trump.
As Elders we know that the wellbeing of our planet, and our people depend upon respecting and caring for the interconnected, interrelated and interdependent community of Life. We advocate for social, racial and economic justice, ecological integrity, and peaceful coexistence for all people, for all species, for all time. We feel our moral responsibility to create a thriving and just world as our legacy for our descendants.
As Elders, we are compelled to condemn the “zero tolerance” policy that first saw young children ripped away from their parents as they attempted to seek asylum and safety in the United Statesas immoral and a disgrace to the values we hold dear. With the fate of thousands of children still separated from their parents in doubt, we are raising our collective voices in protest; and, we stand against these deeply harmful public policies.
As Elders we know that it is our responsibility to speak up for the welfare of all, for the seven generations – and we are using our moral voice to oppose the immigration policies of the administration of U.S. Pres. Donald J. Trump.
Within our focus on social justice, we Elder Activists for Social Justice of the Conscious Elders Network, encourage each of us to deepen our understanding, shed our complicity, ally with those who are suffering, and do our part to bring forth a socially just, environmentally sustainable and spiritually fulfilling human presence on this planet – our Mother. We understand that in the history of our nation we have ripped children from their parents during the time of slavery and when we sent Native children to boarding schools. We are determined that these systems of domination and destruction that have persisted in our country and in our historical narratives will not continue.
We recall the words on our Statue of Liberty – a universal symbol of welcome and democracy to those “yearning to breathe free.” We affirm this moral narrative of our nation – to care for the immigrant in our midst.
As Elders we see the erosion of welcome, the rule of law and due process, and the institution of anti-Muslim, anti-Latino and anti-immigrant policies as evidence of a severe moral decline. We call on Congress to enact real immigration reform, re-opening the doors that this administration is attempting to slam shut.
One Earth. One Humanity. One Future.
Resolved and Affirmed:
